Zombies will be lurking as human runners make their way through the wooded area at Holbrook Pond Recreation Area on Oct. 18.

But the zombies won’t be trying to terrify anyone. They just want to add to all the fun at the “Dawn of the Zombies 5K Run at Holbrook Pond.”

It will be more of a friendly competition than a frightful one.

The zombies’ goal: grab as many flags as possible off the humans as they pass. And the zombies’ hands are tied, so to speak: they can’t touch, tackle or hurt the humans in any way.

The humans’ goal: increase their speed, run around or otherwise maneuver to leave the zombies empty-handed and keep their flags all the way to the finish line.

Start time for the Dawn of the Zombies 5K Run is 8 a.m. Registration via www.active.com is under way. The cost is $30 per person until Oct. 11. The fee is $40 on the day of the run.

“Rain or shine, the run is a go” said Courtney Cameron, Stewart/Hunter Sports and Fitness Management Trainee. “We’re hoping for a real good turnout, just like we had for the Color Run last April. You don’t have to be a runner to participate. You can walk or jog the trail if you like. Bring a friend or Family member. The whole idea is to have fun.”

Cameron said the run route will be the same as that for the Color Run and will be clearly marked to make it easy for participants to follow. There will be two free water stations along the route and a third at the start/finish line.

For those who want to record their personal times, a clock will be in place at the start/finish point.

“Participants may dress as they please,” Cameron said. “They can wear athletic clothing or, if they prefer, a Halloween-type costume. It’s up to them.”

“When the run is complete, we’re going to count the number of flags the zombies were able to get and how many flags the humans kept. Those with the most flags win bragging rights,” Cameron said.

Volunteers are needed to help the zombies put on their makeup, or to be zombies themselves, Cameron said. “Right now, our runners outnumber the zombies.”
