Former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams has been selected to deliver the Democratic party’s response to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address next week.

“At a moment when our nation needs to hear from leaders who can unite for a common purpose, I am honored to announce that I’ve been invited to deliver the State of the Union response,” Abrams said in a news release.

“I plan to deliver a vision for prosperity and equality, where everyone in our nation has a voice and where each of those voices is heard.”

“I grew up in a family that knew firsthand that while success would not be a guarantee, we lived in a nation that gave us the best shot at opportunity. But we are facing a crisis of leadership in Washington, and families no longer have the guarantees they’ve worked for their whole lives,” she said.

“Next Tuesday after the State of the Union address, I will deliver an alternate vision that seeks to unite Americans around our common values and goals, and details for Americans how we can move forward in a way that lifts all of us up.”

Following her loss in the Governor’s race to Republican Brian Kemp, Abrams has been advocating for fair elections. Abrams spoke about voter suppression on one of her campaign stops in Hinesville last November.
