Keep Liberty Beautiful
The Annual Beach Sweep 2023 is coming up on September 9, 2023, and Keep Liberty Beautiful needs boat captains to volunteer their time and boat to transport volunteers to St. Catherine’s Island. This year’s Beach Sweep is on Saturday, September 9. The boat captains can leave and return to Halfmoon Marina or Sunbury Boat Ramp. We check in at 9 a.m. and usually return by 1 p.m.
We usually need about 10 boats to provide seating for our volunteers adequately. KLB will pay launch fees for your boat for Halfmoon Marina. We also offer all the cleanup supplies, food, drinks, and T-shirts. If you are a boat captain and want to participate or learn more information, don’t hesitate to contact KLB at (912) 880-4888. You can also sign up on the form link: https://bit.ly/ beachsweep23.
For cleanup volunteers, if you have yet to be on one of our annual beach sweeps on St Catherine’s Island, you or in for a treat. A beach sweep means that we will be “sweeping” any trash and debris left on the beaches by beach visitors. We often find items that may have been tossed on the mainland ending up on the beach.
We usually have a high number of volunteers for this cleanup. It is one of the most popular cleanups we do. I cannot blame volunteers for wanting to attend because if you are willing to pick up litter, why not opt to do it on a sandy white beach! Sounds lovely to me!
Since our transportation availability limits seating, we encourage interested volunteers to register soon. So, the time to register is now! Our registration list fills up quickly. We book volunteers in the order we receive their requests. You can sign up on Form Link: https://bit.ly/ beachsweep23 You can also contact KLB by phone at (912) 880-4888 or email klcb@liberty countyga.com to register and find out more information!
Our next quarterly Recycle It! Fairs are scheduled for Saturday, August 12. This is another event that helps you if you start sorting and packing items now that you want to recycle. We provide quarterly Recycle It! Fairs for collecting numerous household items that cannot be dropped off at local recycling drop-off centers. We partner with several community partners to make these recycling and collection opportunities possible. Our partners for this event are Liberty County Road Department, Liberty County Solid Waste, local law enforcement, Fort Stewart, Savannah Shredding Company, and the cities of Midway, Hinesville, and Walthourville. This quarter’s fairs will be open on Saturday, August 12, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at two convenient locations:
• Liberty County Community Complex, 9397 East Oglethorpe in Midway
• Walthourville City Hall, 222 Busbee Drive in Walthourville
Here are the items we recycle at the fairs:
• Electronics and electronic accessories
• Cell phones and accessories
• CFLs and fluorescent light bulbs
• Used motor oil and antifreeze
• Car batteries.
• Household batteries
• Printer ink and toner cartridges
• Telephone books, large sale catalogs, and books
• Household goods and clothes and shoes (gently used, please)
• Old prescription medications and over-the- counter medications (no needles or syringes) We will also host a Shred It! Day at the Walthourville City Hall site on August 12. You want to start sorting any legal, medical, or financial files you would like to recycle safely by shredding the documents. The shred event will also be available from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. (you must be in line by 12:45 p.m.
KLB is also sponsoring the August Chamber Progress through People Luncheon on Thursday, August 17, at 12 noon at the Performing Arts Center on East Oglethorpe Highway. Registration for this luncheon is arranged through the Liberty County Chamber of Commerce by August 14 at operations@liberty county.org or (912) 3684445.
Remember to donate your shoes and clothes until August 12. We hope you plan to join us on August 18-19 to conduct the Great Georgia Pollinator Census from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the KLB office. Please RSVP at https://bit.ly/pollen census to ensure we have enough supplies and food.
