Letter to the editor: Council hears residents’ concerns on recent incident
letter to editor new

To the residents of Hinesville,

Over the past several weeks, we have heard from residents, veterans, military families and community members regarding the recent traffic stop incident involving two residents. We have listened to your concerns, read your comments and understand why so many residents feel troubled and disappointed by what they saw and the questions that followed. For many, this conversation has extended beyond the details of a traffic stop itself. Residents have expressed concerns about compassion, judgment and whether more could have been done under the circumstances. We understand those concerns and we believe they deserve to be acknowledged directly.

The Hinesville Police Department has reviewed the incident and publicly acknowledged areas where additional consideration should have been given. Steps have already been initiated to address concerns identified during that review. However, our responsibility as leaders does not end there. As your elected leaders, we believe our residents expect more than compliance with laws and procedures. They expect professionalism, sound judgment and humanity. Government should never become so focused on process that it loses sight of people. Difficult moments challenge us not only to ask whether procedures were followed, but also whether outcomes reflect the values of the community we serve.

We have spoken with City leadership and emphasized that this situation requires continued attention and that we act with urgency to evaluate policies, procedures and training opportunities to strengthen decision-making and reinforce expectations moving forward. We have a responsibility to continually examine how we serve our community and identify opportunities to strengthen the policies, practices and training that guide us. Our commitment is not simply to respond to difficult moments, but to learn from them and ensure they lead to meaningful improvements in how we serve our residents.

Listening to residents is part of responsible leadership. Our community deserves to know their voices matter and that concerns raised by citizens are heard, considered and taken seriously. We have also seen comments and concerns shared regarding other experiences involving police interactions within our community.

When residents have concerns about their interactions, I encourage them to bring those concerns forward through the Police Department’s formal process so leadership can ensure they receive appropriate attention, review and investigation. Hearing directly from residents helps leadership identify trends when they exist, evaluate practices and ensure concerns receive the attention they deserve.

Meaningful improvements are strengthened by honest feedback. While every concern may not reflect a broader issue, hearing directly from residents helps leadership recognize patterns, evaluate practices, and make informed decisions about training, polices and service delivery. Community input plays an important role in ensuring the services we provide to continue to reflect the standards our residents expect and deserve.

Hinesville has always been a community built on service, resilience and accountability. Communities are strengthened not because difficult moments never occur, but because leaders listen, respond, and continue working to earn the trust of the people they serve.

Our commitment to our community is that we will continue learning, strengthening our practices, pursuing meaningful improvements where needed, and ensuring our residents know their concerns matter.
