Shelter desperately needs donations

Editor, Times are hard here at the Liberty Humane Shelter. As you all probably know, we operate solely on donations. We receive no monetary support from Liberty County; the cities of Hinesville, Flemington, Allenhurst, Walthourville and Midway; or any other municipality within Liberty County.
We do, however, provide a service for the entire county. We continue to take unwanted and stray animals off the street and put them into permanent homes where they will be properly cared for. This is not only the right thing to do for the animals; it is the right thing to do for the people of our community. Stray animals can be a serious source of danger and
disease.
As with all other charities, our donations are at an all-time low. The bad economy is affecting all residents of our county, and with this we have seen an increase in the number of people who cannot care for their animals and have to give them up.
When we take an animal at the shelter, we commit to its care until we find a permanent home. Sometimes this may be only a week or two, or unfortunately, months and even years.
We are to the point that we soon will not be able to provide medical supplies, medications, cleaning supplies or the small salaries of our employees. We are begging for your help. We are in desperate need of cash donations now. Our utility bills have been astronomical due to the extreme, unusual cold weather, and some animals have required medicine and treatment that we obtained on credit but have not had the money to pay
for.
It is very costly to properly care for these animals and provide them with the best possible care before they are sent into homes. This care includes vaccinating, worming, testing, spaying/neutering and chipping all pets before they go home.
We humbly ask that you look deep in your hearts and give whatever you can to help us care for these animals that cannot care for themselves. We realize that other charities are campaigning for contributions as well, but we ask you to consider that monies gifted to Liberty Humane stay in Liberty County.
While cash is needed most, we also can use bleach, Fabuloso all-purpose cleaner, paper towels, laundry detergent, dish detergent and copy paper.  All contributions are tax deductible and are truly needed and greatly appreciated.
Also, if you have the ability
to sponsor a fundraiser, please contact us to discuss the details. We welcome a visit from you anytime to see the conditions we face here at the shelter. Thank you for any consideration you can offer us in these desperate times.
