I need to get out my calculator. We are halfway through our annual Great American Cleanup effort, which runs through May 31. Keep Liberty Beautiful documents participation at all roadside and citywide cleanup events, campus cleanups, Adopt Liberty Cleanups, education- and public-awareness efforts, recycling events, neighborhood projects and beautification projects because I begin to lose track in my head at about this point in the “season.”
I recently checked the statistics we have compiled so far, and I just want to thank the hundreds of volunteers who already have given their time to make a difference in our community this year.
So far, we have had more than 500 volunteers help us clean up roads and streets in many areas of our community. We also have had more than 100 volunteers help plant trees and flowers to beautify a variety of areas. A couple hundred volunteers helped promote awareness of litter prevention, water issues and recycling and waste reduction. More than 100 civic and youth groups, businesses and churches also participated in these efforts — and that’s just a quick “snapshot.” If you haven’t gotten involved yet, there is still time and there is plenty to do!
On April 30, we will have city cleanups in Midway, Flemington and Gum Branch. Each cleanup starts with registration at 8:45 a.m. at the respective municipality’s city halls.
Each city cleanup will end with a picnic lunch for the volunteers, who also will receive free Great American Cleanup T-shirts emblazoned with our cool GAC design. The shirts were created by Imprint Warehouse. Certainly a cool T-shirt is reason enough to spend a few hours cleaning up the community. Please call 880-4888 or email klcb@coastalnow.net for more information.
We already have a few campus cleanups scheduled in early May and some more neighborhood projects, but there is plenty of time to get your school, neighborhood or group involved.
On May 26, we will host our Keep Liberty Beautiful annual volunteer appreciation in conjunction with the Liberty County Chamber of Commerce.
The Business after Hours event will be at the Old Mills House from 5-7 p.m. The party is our way of showing our appreciation to all the fantastic volunteers who make these cleanups happen. So mark your calendars now! And thank you for all you do — you all rock!
