ATLANTA — Athletes for a Better World and the Georgia High School Association have announced a partnership with the creation of the Vincent J. Dooley Awards and Scholarships program.
The Vincent J. Dooley Awards will be presented to the two senior athletes in each high school in Georgia who exhibit the highest values and most dedication to making a difference in the community.
“This is a great step in our work over the past several years to emphasize the importance of sports as a means of developing character,” GHSA Executive Director Ralph Swearngin said. “Both Coach Dooley and ABW represent the values to which all young athletes should aspire.”
The athletic director at each high school in Georgia will select a male and a female senior athlete to receive the award. Each award recipient then becomes a nominee for the Dooley Scholarship, which is a four-year, $1,000 a year scholarship to be awarded to one male and one female each year. The scholarship is provided by Champion Windows and Patio Rooms.
Award recipients will be selected in December and scholarship winners will be announced at a banquet in Atlanta in the spring.
Vince Dooley has been a respected figure in Georgia athletics for more than 40 years, not only for his success as a football coach and athletic director but also for his contribution to the community.
