Former Liberty County track and field star Courtney Bennett placed first and won the shot put competition in the 2017 Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championships over the weekend in Charleston, Illinois.

Bennett’s throw of 15.15 meters (49 feet, 8.75 inches) beat out the second place finisher, Eastern Illinois senior Bryn Buckwalter, by one centimeter to obtain the victory, and was the only member for Jacksonville State University to place first in any event over the weekend.

Bennett also finished second in the weight throw competition with a throw of 18.23 meters (59 feet, 10 inches).

The Gamecocks finished seventh overall in the women’s division of the conference indoor championships with 46.5 points. Bennett’s win in the shot put competition accounted for 18 of their total points, with 10 coming from her first place win in shot put, and 8 for her second place finish in weight throw.
