The Long County High School boys soccer team beat Tattnall County 3-1 Tuesday, winning its first Region 2-AAA championship.

Having been region runner-up the last two years, the win was especially sweet for the Blue Tide.

Scoring goals against Reidsville were Alex Maldonado, Paul Cruz and Cayetano Sanchez. Assistant coach Cory Brace praised the entire team and recognized all of the seniors.

"The boys team has worked hard and their dedication has paid off," Brace said. "They were runners-up the two previous years, and the seniors were thrilled to go out claiming a region title. Our seniors are Cayetano Sanchez, Alex Duenes, Brett Blake, Damian Jones, Michael Tepetate, Aron Nevarez and Luis Perez."

The Blue Tide went into the championship game off a big 1-0 win over the No. 4 AAA team in the state, Windsor Forrest (12-1-1) on March 31. In that game, Cruz chipped in the only goal for either team.

With the victories, Long County improved its record to 12-3 overall and 8-2 in the region. The Blue Tide are off until April 26 when they host a first-round of the state playoffs.

"Please come out to support the Blue Tide boys in their battle for a state championship," Brace said. "We hope to see everyone at Veteran’s Stadium."

The Lady Tide also had a good outing this week. On March 31, they lost to Windsor Forrest 9-3, but then bounced back on Tuesday to beat Tattnall County 4-1. With the win, the Ludowici girls secured a first-round home game in the state playoffs by finishing as the No. 2 team in the region. The Lady Tide finished the regular season 7-7 overall and 6-3 in the region.
