Calvary tops Lady Tide softball

Lady Tide senior Leah Denmark looks to make the throw over to first base.

The Long County Lady Blue Tide softball team were looking to get back on track after dropping an offensive showdown to Southeast Bulloch last week for the first region loss of the year. They welcomed in the Calvary Day Lady Cavaliers on Tuesday, August 27.

Tuesday’s game was certainly not the slugfest from last Thursday, but it was a strong third inning from the Lady Cavaliers that was the Tide’s undoing in the end in a 5-1 loss.

Both teams struggled to get anything going in the first inning, each getting just one hit. The Cavaliers only got one hit in the second inning before the Lady Tide put two on with back-to-back singles from Lana Lewis and Casey Lust with no outs on the board.

However, two straight pop outs and a ground out to second stopped the Lady Tide’s momentum in its tracks.

The top of the third was where things got going for the Cavaliers as they put one on with a single to left field. They got on the board with a two-run home run over the left field wall to go up 2-0.

An error at first base and two straight singles loaded the bases with two outs on the board before a single to right field made the score 4-0. Alyssa Skipper got out of the inning with a strikeout, but the damage was done.

Jersi Lester and Ciara O’Brien singled to put two on with one out, but the Lady Tide could not take advantage as Ainsley Anderson grounded into a double play.

The 4-0 score held until the final inning where the Cavaliers added one more run as a runner scored from second base during a rundown of another runner between first and second with just one out on the board.

The Tide finally got one on the board in the seventh as they tried to rally in the final inning. Leah Denmark opened the bottom of the inning with a double before Reese Davis’ pinch hit single to right field plated the senior and make the score 5-1.

The Tide had two on with two outs and O’Brien up to bat, having reached in all three at-bats on the day.

The Cavaliers finally got her, though, as the Tide’s comeback attempt fell short.

With the loss, the Lady Tide fall to 2-5 and 1-2 in the region. They will look to turn things around today as they travel to Savannah to take on the Islands Sharks in another key region game.
