GREENWOOD, S.C. — Regular-season champion Clayton State University built a 17-point second half lead and then held off a late Armstrong Atlantic State University rally to claim a 73-70 win, Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2007 Peach Belt Conference women’s basketball tournament.
Guard Sharon Wiles paced Clayton State (23-5) with 15 points, while reserve Nikkisha Pritchett added 12, and Crystal Brown and Shantel Ragin with 10 apiece.
The loss for AASU (15-14) overshadowed a great performance by forward Kaneetha Gordon, who scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. In Wednesday’s first-round win, the former Liberty County Panther set the PBC Tournament single-game record with 23 rebounds. Lacey Willis followed Gordon with 16 points, including 12 in the final half.
After owning a 45-30 advantage at intermission, Clayton State increased the margin 58-41 following a Roberta Phillips three-pointer with 14:57 left. AASU then pieced together a 26-10 run over the next 10 minutes.
