If the Diamonds wanted to win the Liberty County Recreation Department Junior softball championship, they had to beat the Angels twice Tuesday. No problem.
Dominique Sibley pitched both games — 12 innings — striking out a combined 24 batters as the Diamonds won 9-8 and 10-5 to claim the title.
In the playoffs, Sibley pitched 26 innings, striking out 53.
Her counterpart, Angels pitcher Kanae Gordon also had a good series, striking out 17 batters and pitching both games.
In the first game, the Diamonds went ahead 9-1 in the fourth inning, but the Angels battled back, scoring seven runs. They scored two in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth.
However, Sibley struck out the final batter to force the “if” game.
The final game went back and forth, with three lead changes and two ties.
The Angels jumped out in front 2-0 in the first inning when Diana Jimenez knocked in Suede Jones and Shanequia Brunson.
The Diamonds tied it in the home half when Traci Holton and Sibley scored.
The Diamonds took the lead in the second when Shameka Williams scored Kaitlyn Stacey.
The Angels went ahead 4-3 in the third when Lauren Motzer and Jones scored.
The Angels’ lead didn’t last long as Camisha Lewis and Sibley scored for the Diamonds to take a 5-4 lead in the third inning.
Cherre LaBelle tied the game for the Angels at 5 in the fourth.
Ashley Laboy scored for the Diamonds in the bottom half to retake the lead.
Then, the floodgates opened in the fifth inning as Lewis, Holton, Sibley and Stacy scored for the Diamonds, making it 10-5.
They couldn’t rest as the Angels started a two-out rally in the sixth, with Crystal Brooks, Jimenez and Gordon scoring. But, Sibley got the final batter to ground out to second, ending the game.
Diamonds players include Robin Glandon, Teniqua Grimsley, Traci Holton, Camisha Lewis, Ashley Laboy, Jenna Mobley, Dominique Sibley, Kaitlyn Stacy, Rachel Trawick, Shameka Williams, Jenny Windham, Brittnye Wilson and Briyana Wilson. Tammy Stacy coaches the Diamonds.
