FPCA boys basketball coach cuts down the net after his team won the GISA Region 2-AA title with a 67-53 victory over Memorial Day in Jeffersonville on Friday night.

The First Presbyterian Christian Academy boys’ basketball team won their eighth straight region championship Friday night. The Highlanders polished off Memorial Day 67-53 in Jeffersonville to take home Georgia Independent School Association Region 2-AA trophy.

After the game, Highlanders George Mitchell, Khalyn Weekley Isaiah Scott, John Killough and Simon Steele were named to the All-Region Team. Highlander coach Shane Smith was selected as the Region Coach of the Year.

Weekley set the pace for FPCA, netting 25 points in the win. Mitchell dropped in 13, Trayvon Harris scored nine, Steele had eight points, Scott and Killough each had six points.

The first quarter was intense, and the two teams did the best they could to settle into the game in neutral territory at Twiggs Academy. The Matadors had a one-point lead by the end of the first quarter, but the Highlanders were up by eight at the half and held Memorial Day to only nine points while scoring 21 in the third.

The Matadors outscored the Highlanders 21-15 in the fourth quarter, but FPCA had already built the cushion it needed to hold on for the win.
After the win, Smith cut down the net, and the team celebrated its eighth region title. But the Highlanders have loftier goals as they prepare for the state playoffs.

Last year, FPCA was eliminated before reaching the championship game by Monsignor Donovan Catholic, and it is likely the Highlanders will need to get past that team this year as they chase a state title.

Also honored after the win was Lady Highlander Mary Kathryn Whitney who made the girls All-Region Team.
