Lady Tigers advance to state tourney

The Bradwell Institute volleyball team has advanced to the state Class AAAAAA tournament.

The Lady Tigers competed in the Region 2-AAAAAA tournament this past week in Richmond Hill. In the first match, the Lady Tigers defeated Brunswick in two straight sets. In the second match, the girls lost a hard fought match to Effingham County.

The Lady Tigers played Brunswick again, and the winner faced Richmond Hill for the No. 3 seed. In the final match of the day, the girls lost to Richmond Hill and ended up as the No. 4 seed. The team will travel to Jonesboro on Thursday. Game time is at 5:30 p.m.

"The ladies are starting to come together at the right time," coach DeAndre Davis said, adding that the Lady Tigers’ region schedule should help them in the postseason

"Region 2AAAAA is one of the most competitive regions in the state," he said. "Competing against Richmond Hill, Effingham and Glynn Academy has prepared the ladies for this moment."

Sofia Heard and Angel Torres led all scorers with 23 points each during the region tourney. Kierra Martin finished with 21 points, Nicole Lakin had 20 points, Kyle Worriels scored 18 points, Analeece Long scored 14 points and Vivica Gray added 14 points.

Martin (222 points), Heard (217), Torres (207) and Long (207) all finished with more than 200 points this season, Davis said, the first time that’s happened.

Lakin added 166 points and Gray had 133.

"Watching the young ladies grow during the season has been a pleasure," Davis said. Making the playoffs is a great way to send the seniors off."
