Lady Tigers forge four-game win streak

The Bradwell Institute Lady Tiger basketball team is on a four-game winning streak.
It started Dec. 5, when the girls beat South Effingham, at home in a Region 3-AAAAA game. The following day, BI beat the Lady Warriors of Tattnall County, 52-43, in non-conference play.
On Tuesday, during another region contest, BI beat Richmond Hill, 35-31, in the Lady Wildcats’ gym. This Friday, the girls avoided an overtime game drawing late fouls and hitting all the free throws needed to beat Statesboro, 50-46. It was their third region win in a row as well.
The Bradwell girls held the lead throughout the game against the Blue Devils until late in the fourth quarter. The Statesboro girls made a run and tied, 44-44, with half a minute left.
BI guard Journae’ Young was instrumental in drawing three fouls in the last seconds of play and hit 5-of-7 for the win. She ended the game going 7-of-9 at the line. Lady Tiger senior Jakaria Fleming was 8-of-9 at the line and led the girls in scoring with 17 points, including a three-pointer. Brianna Johnson was second, scoring 10 and was responsible for nabbing several of the Blue Devils’ turnovers.
The Tigers boys had a rough week, losing, 67-34, at Richmond Hill and 58-29 at Statesboro on Friday.
The Lady Tigers are 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the region. The boys are 1-7 overall and 1-3 in region play. The Tiger boys were also set to play Saturday at Lowndes. The girls and boys will host Wayne County Tuesday, starting at 5 p.m.
