The Liberty County Sheriff’s Department played host to their inaugural golf tournament at Cherokee Rose on Saturday.
The event was lined up with participants waiting to showcase their golfing prowess and also play for good causes.
The tournament was put on by Sheriff William Bowman to support needy families.
Some of the organizations on hand included people from the Tri-County Protective Agency and local businesses such as SPR Guns and Coldwell Banker.
Prizes included trophies, basketballs, T-shirts, hats and backpacks.
Bowman said he was inspired to have this event as a way to help meet the needs of Liberty County.
“I just look at the needs of the community,” he said. “I’ve always been a community person, and I saw that great need. During the pandemic, I could see that it was there, and there’s a lot of people that are still suffering in our community.”
Bowman also commented on specific needs, such as helping youth.
“We are here in support of our share of youth homes,” he said. “We use the funds to help fund the kids that come from a broken home to help get them through high school.”
Other funds will also be going to the Manna House and to support the Tri-County Protective Agency, a shelter for victims of domestic or family violence.
Chief Max Brown and Lt. Philip Bohannon were also at the event and expressed their enthusiasm for Bowman’s aspirations.
“We’ve been working diligently to make sure that this fundraising event is a success,” Brown said.
Bohannon shared the sentiments of both Bowman and Brown.
“Anytime that the sheriff or Chief Brown asks me to be part of something this big and this spectacular, I will be on board as much as I can,” he said. “Lt. Quincy Melvin and I picked up the ball and ran with it.”
Bohannon said he was confident that the tournament would raise a lot of money, not only for the various organizations but also for families and youth.
Bowman also believed the turnout was successful and praised all the individuals and companies that attended.
“It was a community effort, and we hope that we can continue to be able to give enough funds to keep these agencies well-funded throughout the year,” he said.
