Bradwell Institute pulled away in the second half to beat visiting Beach 56-42 on Tuesday in a contest between the Region 3-AAAAA rivals.
But it seemed like anybody’s game in the first half.
Sparked by Shaquoia Crockett and Mariah Maternik, No. 7 BI opened the game on a 12-3 run. The Lady Bulldogs responded with a run of their own to pull within one at the end of the first quarter.
The game was tied at halftime.
"In the first half we were allowing them too many shot opportunities," Lady Tiger coach Faye Baker said. "They are big and they have some big kids. We are not very big, so we have to work hard on blocking out and we didn’t do a good job of it in the first half."
Bradwell regained control in the third quarter, pulling ahead by 11. The Lady Tigers then began burning time off the clock to put the game away.
"I thought Mariah and Coco (Crockett) did an excellent job in working the clock in the fourth quarter," Baker said. "I also thought Quianika Hatchell played an excellent second half. She was very active on the offensive boards, making some key finishes. Coco played an excellent game the entire time. For her to be a freshman, she made excellent decisions with the ball the whole night. She should be commended for for her performance. Maternik and Crockett finished with 17 points each in the win.
The victory improved BI to 16-0 overall and 9-0 in the region. The Lady Tigers play at Johnson tonight at 7 p.m.
