Rion Brown got a start and the first points of the University of Miami’s basketball team’s regular season home opener. The former Liberty County High School player opened the game with a 3-pointer from the left wing, setting the pace for the Hurricanes’ 87-79 win against Stetson on Nov. 9.
Brown ended the game with 10 points.
Brown, a junior at UM, ended last season on a trey-shot streak, hitting at least one in seven straight games. According to UM’s web-site, that ties for the fourth-longest streak in the ACC. Brown was second on the team in 3-point percentage, hitting 39.4 percent, and second on the squad with 41.
Last season, Brown played in 31 games, starting in the final three. In 19.9 minutes per game Brown averaged 7.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, 0.5 assists, 0.5 steals. In ACC play he averaged 6.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.0 three-pointer made per game. Brown scored in double digits 10 times, including the final four games.
During the ACC Tournament, he was second on the team in scoring with 11.5 points per game. He led the team in the NIT tournament with 17.0 points and 35.5 minutes per night, and was second with 6.0 rebounds in the two games.
The Hurricanes were set to play at Florida Gulf Coast University on Tuesday and will be back at home tonight against Jacksonville. The game will be televised on FSN starting at 7.
