With college football winding toward playoffs and potential bowl bids, here is a quick look at some of the local athletes currently playing at the college level.

Savannah State University

Former Bradwell Institute player Sheldon Barnes, now a junior at SSU, has played in 10 games to date, netting 270 rushing yards and one touchdown. He also had four receptions for 8 yards and a touchdown and two total tackles for the season.

Barnes’ former Bradwell teammate Darveon Herron, a sophomore, and former Long County football player Jake Durham, a junior, are listed on SSU’s roster but no statistics have been posted for either player this season.

As of Nov. 14, SSU was 1-9 with one game left on its schedule.

Shorter University

Former Liberty County High School running back Roderick Jones played in 10 games for the Hawks, who finished their season at 6-5.

Jones had 31 carries for 252 yards and one touchdown. He also had two receptions for 13 yards.

Jones also became a father this year, welcoming his son, Robert Jones, earlier this fall.

Tuskegee University

With one more game on the schedule, the Tigers have an 8-1 overall record. That is good news for former Liberty County players Aaron, Trier and Jovan Bennett and Jevon Jones.

Senior Trier Bennett has six solo tackles and three assists so far this season. His brother Aaron Bennett is a junior defensive tackle with 13 solo tackles and six assists in nine games. Jovan Bennett and Jones are sophomores this season and did not have statistics posted.

Georgia State University

Former Bradwell kicker David Miller had one kickoff for 43 yards for the other GSU, which finished 1-10 this season. Miller also had one tackling assist in six games.

Meanwhile, former LCHS Panther Melvin King played in seven games as a freshman, earning six solo tackles with four assists and a sack.

Junior Ulrick John, a BI graduate, had nine starts in nine games as the left tackle.
