Multi-sport athlete Megan Gillon has been selected to the Georgia Independent School Association 2012 All-State Volleyball team.
The First Presbyterian Christian Academy senior was selected by a committee made up of all the GISA volleyball coaches in the state.
FPCA volleyball coach Ami Whilden said it was the first time a Lady ‘Lander has been chosen for All-State in the school’s history. The coach and school administrators say they plan to honor Gillon’s accomplishment by retiring her volleyball number later this year at the annual sports award banquet.
Gillon was also chosen to the All-Region Team by the coaches representing Region 4-AA. Each school nominates players, and the coaches vote.
It is the second time Gillon has been unanimously chosen to the All-Region Team, coach Whilden said.
“Megan’s blocking and hitting made her a selection, but her athletic ability and her sportsmanship are what made her a unanimous decision,” Whilden said.
Also chosen to the All-Region Team was eighth-grader Cecilia Graham.
“She was chosen as the best libero (specialized defensive player) in the region,” Whilden said. “It is very rare for eighth-graders to get this honor because coaches would rather pick older girls for awards.”
Gillon averaged 3.2 kills per set, .08 blocks per set, .09 aces per set, 2.2 digs per set and a .389 hitting average.
“The school has decided to retire her jersey because of her athletic and leadership ability,” Whilden said. “She is also captain of the cheerleading squad, All-Region in soccer, a member of student government, part of literary trio and an A/B student.”
Whilden said she was proud of Gillon’s accomplishments.
“I have been coaching a long time and she is one of best all around people I have ever met,” Whilden said.
“I really enjoyed Megan being our senior captain,” Alex Moses, the volleyball team’s co-captain, said. “She was a joy to be around with her constantly positive personality. The rest of the team and myself will greatly miss Megan and we know she will do well in the future.”
The Lady ‘Landers volleyball team finished 3-12 overall in what Whilden described as a much improved season from last year.
“But we played a tougher schedule,” the coach said. “We also played a tougher opponent in the state playoffs this year, so we did not get as far. I was very happy with the way the team and individuals improved this season.”
