The Long County High School baseball team got stung by Jeff Davis County High School, 7-2, in Ludowici on Wednesday. The game was the first 2-AA Region game for both teams.
Early, it looked like the Blue Tide might have the stuff to notch their third win of the season. After a scoreless first inning, Long County put up two runs.
Jeff Davis put up their own run in the top of the third, but with solid pitching by both squads, the score was 2-1 at the end of four innings.
From the fifth inning on, the hometown fans had little to cheer about. The visitors allowed Long County only one more hit and held them scoreless for the rest of the game. And the Yellow Jackets found their bats midway in the fourth inning.
In the fifth they put up 4 runs. And in the sixth, 2 more runs was more than enough for the win.
Luke Golden got the loss for the Long County team. Brandon Stroder picked up the win for Jeff Davis. The Blue Tide had 6 hits with one error. The Jackets had 9 hits and one error.
With the win, the Yellow Jackets improved their record to 3-1. The Blue Tide fell to 2-2.
“They pitched well,” Long County head coach Brian Thomas. “They kept us off balance all night and we never were able to get in a groove.
“We have to work on hitting the ball in the opposite field and up the middle, but we’re getting better on defense in the infield and in the outfield.”
On Tuesday, the Blue Tide takes on Pierce County (4-0) in another big 2-AA contest. That game is in Ludowici and it begins at 6 p.m.
On Thursday Long County defeated Bryan County 10-0, and on Friday they faced Tattnall County in Reidsville. Pick up a Wednesday Courier for a full story on those games. Also go to www.coastalcourier.com to see pictures from the Jeff Davis game.
