Local athletes named to All-Academic Team

Former Liberty County High School baseball player Chris Arnold and Bradwell Institute football player Sheldon Barnes were among the 59 Savannah State University student athletes recently named to the 2013 Commissioner’s All-Academic Team.
The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference made the announcement last week.
The honor recognizes MEAC student-athletes, from sophomores to seniors, with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better.
Arnold has played baseball for the Tigers the past four seasons. The Tigers won the 2013 MEAC title this year. Arnold played in 47 games with 46 starts. He had 138 at bats with 19 runs scored, 32 hits, nine doubles and 23 RBIs. Arnold studied political science.
Barnes played in 11 games as a Tigers running back, rushing for 362 yards on 101 carries and one touchdown. He also had five receptions for 11 yards and a touchdown last season. Barnes is studying homeland security/ emergency management.
