Golfers who think they’re the best in the area now have a way to prove it on the course: The First Bryan County Open is coming to Black Creek Golf Club.
What’s believed to be the first stroke play event in Bryan County in recent memory will be July 12-13 at the 18-hole, Par 72 course, which was purchased in January by O.C. Welch.
The Open is expected to include men’s women, seniors and juniors play, said Don Carlisle, general manager for O.C. Welch Golf Properties.
“Everybody I’ve talked to about it thinks it’s going to be a really big deal,’ said Carlisle, who expects around 100 golfers to participate in the debut event.
“I think it’s a good thing for golf in the area,” he said. “It’s a good way not only to promote Black Creek, but also promote golf in Bryan County. This is the kind of showcase where we can let other folks know that hey, we’ve got some people up here who can play.’
 Carlisle called the course a “hidden gem” and lauded work done by new course superintendent Chris McDougall.
“He’s just taken the reins,” Carlisle said. “He’s been here three weeks and the course is already looking really good and going in the right direction. I’m confident this will be one of the best, if not the best, courses in the area by July.”
