It wasn’t easy, and it wasn’t by much, but after all was said and done Wednesday, the Long County High School girls soccer team advanced into the second round of the Georgia High School Association AAA Girls State Soccer Tournament by beating Jackson High School.
Playing in Ludowici the Lady Dragons took the early lead 1-0.
Long County’s Porshia Cummings tied the game at 1-1 in the second half and that’s where the score remained through regulation play.
In the first overtime period neither team was able to do much with solid goalie play by both teams.
With time dwindling down in the second overtime period, the Lady Tide’s Alexis Marrero booted the ball over the goalie’s head to give Long County the 2-1 win advancing Long County into the Sweet-16 round of the state playoffs.
Lady Tide head coach Sabrina Caines expressed pride in her team after the game and said that they worked hard to get to where they were in the playoffs.
"I was extremely happy and proud of my team’s play, they are a young starter team and making this far is a true testament to the hard work and dedication they have put in this season," Caines said.
Long County will now take on Adairsville High School, which squeaked by Jackson County 1-0 to advance in the playoffs.
Caines said that her team will have to play even better this week if they are going to be successful and move further into the tournament.
"In order to advance to the next stage, my team will need to give it all they’ve got, they will need a lot of heart and hustle," Caines said.
Caines said that no matter what the results are for the upcoming game, she is proud of her team’s effort this year.
"This team has so much to be proud of and they have grown so much since the beginning of the season, no matter what happens next week, they are an amazing team and it has been an honor to coach them", said Caines.
The Long County verses Adairsville game is on Tuesday in Ludowici, but the time had not been determined.
