Mary Persons withstands Liberty comeback

Anaja Lucear made three free throws in the final, and the Mary Persons Lady Bulldogs held off the Liberty County Lady Panthers 47-43 in the second round of the Class AAA girls state basketball playoffs Friday night.

Liberty trailed by as much as 11 points in the third quarter but got 3-pointers from Destiny Grider and Keshauna Woods to start the comeback. Grider’s two free throws tied the game at 35-35.

The Lady Panthers trailed by five, 34-29, going into the fourth quarter before embarking on an 11-5 run to take their first lead since a 14-12 advantage in the second quarter.

The Lady Panthers took a 40-39 lead before Zoey Shannon’s basket put Mary Persons in front for good.

Mary Persons (25-4) advances to meet the winner of Carver (Atlanta) vs. Hebron Christian. Liberty’s season ends at 19-9.
