The Liberty County football team starts postseason play Friday at Griffin.
The Panthers have a huge task at hand as they are depleted at quarterback. Jaalon Frazier is not eligible following his ejection from last Friday’s game, and Walker Franklin is not medically cleared to play. That means the Panthers will look to freshman junior-varsity quarterback Aaron Kuhl and rely heavily on all-around player Richard LeCounte.
Panther offensive coordinator Ryan Glazer said Kuhl knows the playbook and added that standout running back Jacquez Williams also could take snaps. Last week, in the Panthers’ 44-22 win at home over Richmond Hill, Williams rushed for 51 yards on six carries and led the team in receptions with five catches for 83 yards and a touchdown.
Frazier was in the midst of having a good passing night, going 8 of 12 for 158 yards and a touchdown before he was ejected in the fourth quarter. A fight broke out between Panthers and Wildcats players, and the referee and tossed Frazier from the game.
Panther head coach Kirk Warner had said that if Frazier’s appeal was denied, they would depend on LeCounte to lead the team, but all the key players needed to contribute to earn the win.
LeCounte last week led the team in rushing with 117 yards and four touchdowns on 13 carries. He made a one-handed reception for 36 yards and later became the sole QB during the fourth quarter. He finished the night going 3-for-4 passing for 77 yards, including a 55-yard TD pass to Jacari Roberts. He also led the defense with 13 total tackles, including two for loss, and two fumble recoveries.
Roberts aided the offense last week by completing his only pass for a 28-yard touchdown to Williams. JaMarques Latson had two receptions for 83 yards and a touchdown last week as well. Sophomore Eddie Baker has been running the ball well in the absence of injured RB Jarquel Richardson.
Roberts, Calvin Holmes and Anthony Stewart had 11, 11 and 10 total tackles, respectively, against Richmond Hill and will need to make the stops again Friday.
The Panthers have amassed 1,699 rushing yards, 1,270 passing yards and 26 total touchdowns to date. The defense has made 13 sacks, seven interceptions and 781 total tackles.
The Griffin Bears are 10-0 and 8-0 of Region 4B-AAAA. No stats have been posted for the Bears.
Liberty is 4-6 overall and 1-3 in Region 3-AAAA.
