The Panthers improved their overall record to 5-2 and 1-0 in the region with a definitive victory over the Wayne County Yellow Jackets on Dec. 11, with a final score of 63-40.
Sophomore Jordan McRae and seniors Michael Manning and William Lee led the scoring with 13, 10 and 10 points respectively.
Panther head coach Willie Graham said he’s pleased to add another win but felt there still needed to be some improvement based on the performance he saw against the Yellow Jackets.
“Our performance was spotty at best,” he said. “We came out nicely on defense. We put the pressure on the guard the way we wanted to and got the lead early at kept it for most of the game. But still our performance was spotty.”
The Panthers are preparing for their rematch against Beach. In their last meet, the Panthers suffered a tough loss in overtime and are looking forward to the opportunity to face them on their home court.
“We take one game at a time,” Graham said. “Right now we are preparing for Beach. Once that game is over we will think about Camden County. We will make our adjustments on the fly.”
There is not much time for game analysis or film study between the Beach game today and the Camden game Saturday, but Graham said having back-to-back games is something that is synonymous with basketball.
“We have one more game on Saturday, but after that we have a lot of back-to-back and you have to get use to it,” he said. “We may have to travel back and forth while playing back to back games. You just have to adapt.”
To build strength and stamina, some of the athletes hit the weights.
“Some of our players take weight training class during school,” Graham said. “Others take some time after school to work out. Physically it helps them stay strong, keeps them from fatigue and helps their stamina in back-to back-games. You can tell the players who put in the extra effort with the weights versus the ones who don’t.”
Scoring
Jordan McRae 13
Michael Manning 10
William Lee 10
Donrico Wigfall 9
Rashine Mitchell 9
Rion Brown 5
