The Liberty County Panthers turned a game-ending double play and held on for a 3-2 non-region baseball win over First Preparatory Christian Academy on Monday.
Carlos Singleton and Evan North were matched in a pitcher’s duel. North went five hitless innings, striking out 11 and walking two in five innings. He gave up just one unearned run in the second inning off a walk, steal, bunt and error.
Singleton lasted 6 1/3 innings, throwing 103 pitches. He struck out nine and walked one, and retired seven straight Highlanders batters during a stretch from the first through third innings.
Ke’Koa Nunn drove in Logan Brown with a groundout, and Chase Streeper’s bunt plated North for a 2-1 lead in the third inning.
Anthony Gerace led off the top of the sixth with a double, and Singleton drew a walk. Both runners came around to score to put the Panthers on top 3-2, thanks to a wild pitch and a groundout.
With the win, the Panthers improved to 6-7, including a 7-3 win March 15 over the visiting Yough (Penn.) Cougars.
