The Coastal Crew Rebels 16U and 17U boys’ basketball teams are going to Disney World to face some of the toughest teams in the South during the Amateur Athletics Union 2008 Easter Classic March 20-23.
The Easter Classic is the first road tournament this year for the Rebels 16U and 17U squads.
Medals and trophies will be presented for first and second places. Third and fourth place teams earn medals. The Rebels hope to finish strong as the top four finishers in each age division will receive a bid into the 2008 AAU National Tournaments.
17U coach Ernie Walthour said he was pleased with the talented pool of players he has from Liberty, Long and Bryan counties.
The 16U Rebels, coached by Mike Brown will hit the courts on Friday morning at the Champions Sports Complex near the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando. Tip off is scheduled for 10:20 a.m. and they will face either Nike Team Florida or the Braves.
The 17U Rebels will tip-off at the Disney Complex at 1 p.m. where they will face either the Breeze or the Central Florida Hawks.
Walthour said he is excited to get the AAU season started and has plans to take his 13U, 14U, 15U, 16U and 17U Rebels to as many tournaments as they can to provide the kids exposure and perfect their basketball skills.
Walthour is thankful for the continued support of the community and sponsors. He said without that support it would be difficult to get the kids the type of exposure they deserve.
The AAU is one of the largest, non-profit, volunteer, sports organizations in the United States. A multi-sport organization, the AAU is dedicated exclusively to the promotion and development of amateur sports and physical fitness programs.
It is the premiere arena for college scouts and recruiters. Knowing this the Walthour and the Rebels coaches make sure the kids stay academically eligible by keeping up their studies in addition to playing basketball.
Walthour plans to post their progress at the Easter Classic on their website. For more information on the Coastal Crew rebels or to help sponsor the teams for their next tournament call Ernie Walthour at (912) 980-4559 or visit www.coastalcrewrebels.com
