No. 4 Auburn earned the program’s first trip to the softball College World Series by sweeping a best-of-three Super Regional series from No. 11 Louisiana-Lafayette last weekend in Auburn, Alabama, according to auburntigers.com.
The Tigers (54-9) won the first game 12-11 Friday and claimed a 6-3 victory Saturday to clinch the CWS berth. Auburn opens CWS play at 2:30 p.m. today against Louisiana State in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Bryan County High School alumna Tiffany Howard went 1 for 7 at the plate for Auburn in the two games, drove in two runs, scored once and drew three walks
Auburn went 2-1 this season against LSU, which comes into the game ranked No. 5.
Today’s game will be televised on ESPN.
Other first-round games today, according to bleacherreport.com, in the double-elimination tourney are (rankings in parentheses):
• Florida (1) vs. Tennessee (8), noon (ESPN)
• Michigan (3) vs. Alabama (6), 7 p.m. (ESPN2)
• UCLA (7) vs. Oregon (2), 9:30 p.m. (ESPN2)
The championship finals begin Monday.
