The Sweet 16 wasn’t so sweet for local high school basketball teams.

The Bradwell Institute girls fell 54-35 to Tucker on Wednesday night in the second round of the state Class AAAAAA tournament.

The Lady Tigers ended their season at 18-10 and earned the program’s fourth region title in coach Faye Baker’s 23-year-career.

The Tigers also lost in round two, falling 83-73 to Heritage on Thursday in Conyers.

Bradwell finished 20-8 in coach Will Douberly’s second season.

In Class AAA, Long County (19-10) lost 62-49 to Cental Macon in Macon.

Tennis

Bradwell faced Liberty County in a tennis match Feb. 13 at BI.

The Tigers won 5-0, the Lady Panthers won the girls matches by a 3-2, according to coach Ken Scharnagl.

Bradwell played host to Wayne County on Feb. 15. The Yellow Jackets won 5-0 over the BI boys and 3-2 over the Lady Tigers.

Track

Bradwell Institute opened its track season Feb. 15 at rival Liberty County.

Here’s what coach Brian Williams had to say:

"Destiny Nash set a school record in the 100 m eters with a time of 11.83 seconds. She also was awarded the female athlete of the week for sprints according to ga.milesplit.com for her performance of 11.83 in the 100 and 25.35 in the 200.

"Kyra Barney won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet 2 inches.

"Enfinity Marshall won the triple jump with a leap of 35 feet, 8 inches. That currently makes her No. 1 in Class AAAAAA.

"Jayda Daniels won the 400 with a time of 1 minute

"Kailey Brough won the 1,600 and 3,200 with times of 5:47 and 12:56.

"Abravion Felder won the 800 with a time of 2:29

"Kimyana Shropshire won the pole vault, clearing 8 feet 6 inches.

"Chalece Frasier won the 300 hurdles with a time of 49.56

"And the girls 4x100 relays consisting of Barney, Daniels, Marshall and Nash ran a time of 48.26 making them the fastest time so far this year in AAAAAA.

"It’s still early in the season so there aren’t many teams in the rankings yet. But I do believe we will have a bunch of girls advance to the state championship this year."

The BI team had another meet Thursday at Liberty County. Bradwell hosts a meet March 3.

Baseball

From Bradwell coach Jeff Polk came this early season outlook for his Tigers:

"This year we are fairly young and unexperienced due to graduating all but two varsity starters last year, O’Brien Nobles and Hunter Hawkins.

"We are working on developing fundamentals with our young talent. Our coaching staff, along with myself, stress everyday how important fundamentals are for a successful team.

"We stress the small details in everything we do both baseball and non-baseball related. Our philosophy this year is very simple... ‘do your job’ We will need players such as OB and Hunter to step up and lead by example which undoubtedly they will.

"I expect as the season goes on to see both mental and physical improvement from this young team.

Every home Friday game will be military appreciation, $3 dollar admission with military ID."

All-Star game

A middle school/freshmen all-star game will be played at 12:30 p.m. March 10 at Midway Middle School. Doors open at noon and admission is $7. Teams can register online at iballusa.com.

IBALL at the Beach

IBALL at the Beach boys and girls basketball regional tournament will be April 6-8 and is accepting team registrations. Each team is guaranteed three games.
