SAVANNAH — Starting this fall, students at Armstrong Atlantic State University will have the opportunity to earn a B.S. in business economics, expanding on one of the university’s most popular degree tracks.
Offered through the College of Liberal Arts, the new degree program serves as an extension of the university’s longstanding economics degree.
“Armstrong’s B.S. in business economics will offer an exciting new opportunity to students who are interested in studying economics and business in a holistic context,” said Laura Barrett, dean of Armstrong’s College of Liberal Arts. “This degree combines business fundamentals with sought-after communications and leadership skills.”
Armstrong’s proposal for the new degree was approved by the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents last month.
Business economics is a specialized area of study that uses economic analysis to make strategic business and management decisions. The degree will provide a foundation in economics, preparing students for employment in the public sector, the private sector or graduate study in business, finance or law.
“The demand for a business-economics degree at Armstrong is quite strong,” economics professor and department head Yassaman Saadatmand said. “Our business-economics track has been extremely successful, so it made sense to expand the track to a full undergraduate degree program.”
Armstrong’s business economics courses offerings include money and banking, managerial economics, finance, international trade, economics of health, econometrics and marketing and management.
Armstrong’s Department of Economics introduced the business-economics track in fall 2011. Since that time, the economics program at Armstrong has had a 45 percent increase in enrollment.
“This is an exciting time for the Economics department at Armstrong,” Saadatmand said. “We invite students and prospective students to learn more about our new business-economics degree and to discover how this degree program can help advance their careers in the future.”
