The Liberty County Health Department will partner with Winn Army Community Hospital for “Go Pink Liberty County Week” through Saturday to raise breast-cancer awareness in the community.
On Tuesday, vouchers for free clinical breast exams will be given away at the health department on East Oglethorpe Avenue in Hinesville. Clients also will receive giveaways, and staff will be wearing pink ribbons, bows or pins all week long. In addition, special tables will be set up both at the health department and WACH, where breast-cancer survivors will give out breast-health information. Other outreach activities will take place at various community events during the week.
“We are pleased to partner with Winn Army Community Hospital to get the word out about the importance of early detection and screening when it comes to breast cancer,” Liberty County Health Department Nurse Manager Annie Washington said. “We try to educate women about breast health all year long but National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a great time to really drive the messages home right here in Liberty County.”
Representatives from the health department and WACH were on hand when the Liberty County Board of Commissioners recently signed a proclamation officially declaring next week “Go Pink Liberty County Week.” The proclamation states that the goal of the community initiative is to “heighten breast-cancer-awareness efforts, promote breast-health education and establish venues to inform women of available breast-health services in Liberty County.”
According to Susan G. Komen, there will be 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women in the United States this year. Regular screening and finding breast cancer early lead to better chances of survival.
