State closing veterans home

Editor, The Georgia State Veterans independent living domiciliary in Milledgeville has been ordered closed by Nov 30.
This building, known as the Wheeler building (named for Pete Wheeler) is the home to 81 veterans. These veterans have been honorably discharged and served in the military during WWII, Korea or in Vietnam prior to 1975.
These 81 men have already served and their only crime is that they do not need the special skills of a nursing home.
Their eviction is final, the $2.5 million used to service this facility is needed elsewhere, therefore the solution is to make 81 men homeless.
In an e-mail from State Rep. Sistie Hudson, she stated, “I think it is a travesty. I have let the leadership in Atlanta know that I am very displeased with this action. Short of a special session, there is very little else I can do, but yes, I am very alarmed by this action.”
If you believe, as I do, that these men should be honored, respected and thanked for their service and devotion to duty and not evicted. Please contact Gov. Sonny Purdue (email: contact via Web form), your state representative or your state senator.
