New faces shine at scrimmage

There were some new faces getting in on the action Saturday morning when the Georgia Southern Eagles held a scrimmage at Paulson Stadium.
Quarterback Kevin Ellison punched one in on fourth down, sophomore fullback Nardo Govan scored on a long touchdown run and William Banks, a senior who backed up Dominique Swope in 2012, scored twice.
“Offensively, we hit some plays in the run game. The defense had some stops, some tackles for loss, so there were some good plays on both sides. It was good to see some of those guys who haven’t played yet make some plays and gain some confidence,” said GSU coach Jeff Monken, who held an afternoon practice session at Beautiful Eagle Creek to clean up some of the mistakes from the morning’s scrimmage.
“This afternoon, we took the tape from the morning to try to error correct,” Monken said. “We want to get the bad play on film and the good play on film so the guys can see it both ways.”
Special teams shined, too. Rookie kicker Matt Flynn kicked a 47-yard field goal, and Ryan Nowicki, a field-goal kicker in 2012, had a nice punt with an equally nice return by junior running back Brandon Thomas.
Junior linebacker Antwione Williams joined the GSU injury list after suffering an elbow injury. The extent of the injury is unknown.
“Too many red jerseys,” Monken said about the injured Eagles. “Antione Williams hurt his elbow today, and we don’t know what’s going on with that. We’re keeping our fingers crossed we’ll get him back, and we’re doing our due diligence and getting him checked out by the physicians. Other than that, there’s some nicks and dings, some pulled muscles, cramping because it’s hot. We’ll get through that.”
