It’s not too late. Area sport clays enthusiasts can still register their teams, gather their shot guns and head for the seventh annual Friends for Diabetes Sporting Clays Tournament from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. tomorrow at the Dorchester Shooting Preserve in Midway.
The event is the signature fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association’s Team Liberty County Kiss-A-Pig Campaign.
According to Maria Center, director for the Southeast Georgia and Coastal South Carolina American Diabetes Association, the sporting clays shoot has raised more than $302,000 to benefit the ADA during the past six years.
The shoot is organized by Claude Dryden of Dryden Enterprises, Danny Creasy of The Heritage Bank, Charles Gaskin of the Dorchester Hunting Preserve, Liberty Regional Medical Center, Team Liberty members and Kiss-A-Pig candidate Jon Long. Twenty-seven teams are registered for the event.
Campaign co-chairwoman Rene’ Harwell said more than 300 people usually turn out to help make the fundraiser fun and hugely successful.
“The Liberty County Kiss-A-Pig committee greatly appreciates the support of our community and the surrounding areas throughout all of the fundraising events held to raise money for the American Diabetes Association and their quest to find a cure for this dreaded disease that affects so many adults and children across the country,” Harwell said.
The fee for a four-person team is $500 and includes, for each team member, a 50-target fun shoot, lunch and a gift bag.
The 18th annual Kiss-A-Pig Campaign pits teams representing different communities against each other to see who can raise the most money to benefit the ADA’s research as they seek to cure diabetes. The winning team’s candidate gets to kiss Hamlet the pig at the final gala May 21.
There will also be a “Sunset Crab Cook-off” fundraiser April 24 at the Sunbury Crab Company, and a Team Liberty “Porker Run” on May 15.
