Here are some of the issues that area residents are discussing. The statements were phoned in anonymously, so the Courier does not vouch for their veracity, nor do we know what motivated the callers:

Could someone explain why the teachers are being furloughed and the kids are not in school?

It is against the law to put any advertisement in a mailbox. Only postal service employees and the residents are supposed to touch the box. I have the right to go to the police on anyone who puts ads in my mailbox.

The mayor and council members do not deserve that much of a pay raise with everybody struggling to meet their bills.

The city council gets a raise and they are furloughing teachers. They more than doubled their salaries. That’s ridiculous.

I want to know why the council did a sneaky vote on getting a raise. I’m a senior citizen and I didn’t get my increase. There’s people in the schools being forced into days off. And Social Security isn’t going up. But the politicians give themselves raises.
I was at Hunter Army Airfield when the president arrived and I agree with the other caller. He should have visited Warriors Walk to show respect to the military.

I read about the council and mayors getting a raise. We have a good council and a good mayor. They deserve a raise. They are overdue and underpaid. They are willing to work with you. The paper’s always looking for stuff to print that is not true.
