Charges for threat online
Rashawn Smith

A man arrested in Midway on Sunday was denied bond in magistrate court Monday morning. According to a press release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Rashawn Smith, 20, was arrested in Midway and charged with dissemination of information relating to terroristic acts.  He was booked by the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office and placed in jail.

The GBI said Smith created a Facebook User ID of an “unwitting individual to post a hoax threat.”

Saturday just before noon the GBI was made aware of the Facebook post that contained a threat to future protests related to the death of Ahmaud Arbery, officials said.

According to the GBI there was no intention to carry out a threat, but there was an intention to incite terror. The investigation was conducted with the assistance of the FBI and Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, the GBI said, adding that this is an ongoing and active investigation. If anyone has information pertinent to this case, please contact the GBI at 1-800-597-TIPS (8477).
