A 2-year-old child was struck by a vehicle in the parking lot of the Walmart Neighborhood Market on West Oglethorpe highway in Hinesville on Friday afternoon.

According to Hinesville Police Department Assistant Chief Terronova Smith, the child was struck by a vehicle shortly after 3 p.m., and transported to Liberty Regional Medical Center in Hinesville.  

The child was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“The investigation is ongoing,” Assistant Chief Smith said.

The HPD’s traffic accident unit will be conducting the investigation.

“They’ll do a thorough job,” Smith said. “We’ll decide at that point whether charges are necessary or warranted.”
