Cooperative offering scholarships

Coastal Electric Cooperative is accepting applications for the Walter Harrison Scholarship, a program sponsored by Georgia's electric membership corporations.
The $1,000 scholarship can be applied to academic expenses at any accredited two- or four-year university, college or vocational-technical institute in Georgia.
"We are proud to again offer the Walter Harrison Scholarship," said Whit Hollowell, CEO of Coastal Electric Cooperative. "To be a good community citizen, we have an obligation to help young people meet their life goals. Whether it's through the Washington Youth Tour, or scholarships, this is how we do that."
Nine Harrison scholarships will be awarded to students. Grade point average, SAT scores, academic standing, scholastic honors and financial need are considered when determining a student's eligibility.
Students applying for the scholarship must be consumers or the dependents of consumers of Coastal Electric Cooperative, accepted or enrolled in an accredited undergraduate degree program, complete a two-page application, and write a two-page autobiographical sketch with references to plans. The scholarship is available to any college level student, young or old.
Created in 1985 by the board of directors of the Georgia EMC, the trade association for the electric cooperatives of Georgia, the scholarships pays tribute to the late Harrison, a pioneer in the rural electricity movement. Georgia's electric cooperatives have awarded more than $107,000 to students with this scholarship.
Scholarship applications and more details are available at www.coastalelectric.coop or call (800) 421-2343, ext. 2268. Completed applications are due by Feb. 6.
