Brandon Shreihofer of Hinesville is one of 600 youth who have won Scholarships for Military Children Program this year.
The winners were chosen from more than 5,000 who applied for the scholarships at commissaries worldwide. All of the recipients are listed at www.militaryscholar.org, the official website for the program.
Schreihofer won a $1,500 college scholarship at Fort Stewart. Fort Stewart is one of 257 commissaries operated worldwide by the Defense Commissary Agency.
Schreihofer's parents are Franklin and Carla Schreihofer. He is enrolled at University of Florida. His school and community activities include National Honor Society, eagle Scout, church youth group, FCA and marching band.
The program is open to qualified sons and daughters of members of the U.S. Armed services.
Applicants for the 2008 program were required to maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average, participate in voluntary school and community activities, demonstrate leadership and write an essay on "Every able-bodied citizen should be required to serve for a two year period of time in the military - Why or Why Not?"
Manufacturers and organizations that do business with the commissary system funded the scholarships. Scheihofer's scholarship was funded through the generosity of Pactiv/E-Z Foil.
