Former bar to be born again

The building formally home to the popular Hurricanes bar on Highway 84 in Hinesville is about to reopen to the sounds of prayers and church hymns.
The Hinesville City Council recently voted unanimously to approve a special permit use request by the Hinesville Korean Methodist Church to use the building as a temporary sanctuary until board members find a permanent location for the church.
According to Liberty Consolidated Planning Commission planning and zoning specialist Gabriel Hartage, the temporary church will "have close to 100 parking spots and...60 seats in the building."
There were concerns about whether the property, which is zoned C-3 for highway commercial property, could be used for a church, but Hartage said the city's ordinance "allows church use with a special permit."
Councilmembers approved the special permit with two conditions; that all building and fire codes must be met for church use and the use is to be restricted for two years only for that site.
