Health departments in the Coastal Health District (CHD) are offering breast cancer screening events in October in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Regular screening can detect breast cancer early when it is most easily treated, and the health department provides screening to women without health insurance coverage.
The CHD’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP) offers no-cost mammograms for women aged 40 and older without insurance coverage, and women under age 40 if they have identified problems or suspicion of breast cancer. A list of special screening events is included on the second page of this release. Assistance through BCCP is available year-round at all CHD health department locations.
Breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer, and the second leading cause of cancer death in women. Those statistics can sound scary, but it’s important to remember that breast cancer has high survival rates when caught and treated early. Decades of research has shown that women who have regular mammograms are more likely to find breast cancer early, are less likely to need aggressive treatments, and are more likely to be cured. That’s why regular screenings are so important, even if you don’t suspect a problem.
The American Cancer Society says a woman of average risk can start getting yearly mammograms at age 40. If a person has increased risk, then they should talk to their healthcare provider about when they should begin regular mammogram screenings. Considerations that increase risk include a personal history of breast cancer or a strong family history of breast cancer.
