An afternoon swim turned tragic for a Long County girl who drowned Sunday in a borrow pit adjacent to Country Manor mobile home park.
Long County deputies responded shortly before 5 p.m. to a report of a youngster who apparently drowned while swimming with a friend.
Sheriff Craig Nobles did confirm the girl, 11, was pulled from the pond shortly after 6 by members of a Fort Stewart dive team.
The youngster, according to Nobles, got into trouble in the center of the pit, estimated to be about 15 feet deep.
LCSO Det. Nicky Anderson said the girl’s companion tried to help her before seeking help.
Deputy Coroner Robert Parker said the child will be taken to the GBI crime lab Monday for an autopsy.
The child’s name was not released.
