For now, it appears every seat on the Liberty County school board up for election in 2018 will be contested.
The most high profile local seat open is that of Board of Education chairman, and incumbent Lily Baker will face challenger Scott Carrier. Baker, a former coach and teacher, has been chairwoman since 2006. Carrier retired as Bradwell principal in 2017.
Other seats on the school board open in 2018 are the District 4 seat, where three challengers qualified for the post, Karen Branson, James Johns and Carolyn Payne.
Incumbent Marcia Anderson did not qualify to run again, according to Liberty County Elections Supervisior Ella Golden.
In District 5, incumbent Marcus Scott IV is facing a challenge from Dr. Chante Baker Martin. In District 6, incumbent Dr. Yvette Keel will run again, and is challenged by Donita Strickland.
School board elections are non partisan.
Three seats on the Liberty County are up in 2018 as well, but no candidates qualified to face incumbents Marion Stevens, D-1; Justin Frasier, D-2; and Connie Thrift, D-3. All three are Democrats.
In Long County, only District 3 is up for grabs. That seat was left open when Willie Thompson resigned. Candidates include Mike Phillips and Hermon Scott.
Others to qualify in races of local interest include Atlantic Judicial Circuit District Attorney Tom Durden, who was the only qualifier; state Rep. All Williams, D-Midway, who is running unopposed for District 168 seat; and incumbent District 1 Sen. Ben Watson, R-Savannah, is seeking another term. He will face a challenge in the general election from Richmond Hill resident Sandra Workman, a Democrat.
In addition, U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter, R-1, is seeking re-election. He is being challenged by a pair of Democrats, Lisa Ring and Barbara Seidman.
Primaries are May 22. The general election is Nov. 6.
