The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office offered holiday gifts and meals to needy families across the county Thursday morning.
Liberty County Sheriff Steve Sikes said his staff organized the giveaway with Hershey Harriman leading the cause gathering items for the families.
Three huge bags of toys and gifts were given to Cristina Talavera to be distributed to 18 needy families from Puerto Rico currently staying with friends and family. Talavera said these families lost everything when Hurricanes Irma and Maria plowed through Puerto Rico, demolishing their homes and livelihood.
Talavera said many of the displaced have been in Liberty County since October and have struggled in getting assistance.
“When you hear of the struggles and all the issues they’ve been through, it just pulls at you heart,” Sheriff Sikes said.
Nearly another 20 families were offered gifts and meals, each personally delivered by sheriff deputies. Sikes said his staff deserves full credit for making the giveaways an annual tradition and connecting his department to folks in the community.
