Liberty Countians looking for entertainment Friday and Saturday evenings need look no further than the local Performing Arts Center, where Love-It Productions will stage “My Sons from Another Mother,” the latest from playwright and producer Donald Lovette.
Lovette, who also is the county commission chairman, has been writing and staging plays locally since 2007. He said he typically produces three plays per year — one in August, one in December and one in January to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
“I write plays for every reason and every season,” Lovette said, noting that he also writes plays on request throughout the year.
In addition to the weekend’s run of “My Sons from Another Mother,” Love-It Productions also will host its second annual Dramatic Arts Workshop Saturday.
The workshop will be directed by Darius Booker, a Bradwell graduate, Love-It Productions alumnus and Clayton State University Hall of Fame Dramatic Awards inductee. Booker also recently received a scholarship to attend the California Institute of the Arts.
“(The workshop) is an awesome opportunity to introduce local middle- and high-school youth to the various facets of acting, to include articulation, confidence-building, teamwork and improvisation,” Lovette said.
Lovette also noted that the seven cast members of “My Sons from Another Mother” are Liberty County natives, five of whom are current students at local schools.
Lovette said he enjoys providing a platform for local talent to showcase their skills, as well as a means of bringing the arts to the community.
“I strongly feel that simply because we are not a metropolitan community does not mean that we should not have a taste of everything here, to include the dramatic arts,” Lovette said. “It is my honor to have Love-It Productions help to fill that void.”
Show times for “My Sons from Another Mother” are 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8 and 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9. Tickets may be purchased through the Liberty County Chamber of Commerce or through the Bradwell Institute Band Boosters, who is sponsoring the production.
