Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge offers guided tours, events in January

All activities start inside the east entrance of Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.

Sunday, Jan. 1
• Alligators — Rescuing a Dinosaur: 11:30 a.m.-noon. Discover the protective gear of an alligator. Find out if a mother alligator really eats her babies. Meet in the Environmental Education Classroom.
• Struggles, Survival, Success: 2-3 p.m.
For more than 100 years, the Chessers made their home in the Okefenokee Swamp. How did they do it? Meet at Chesser Island Homestead parking area for this tour of the homestead.

Saturday, Jan. 7
• The Birds and the Trees: 10:30 -11:30 a.m.
Did you know that a woodpecker is one of the most important animals in the Okefenokee? Meet in the Environmental Education Classroom for a talk and short walk.

Saturday, Jan. 14
• Winter Photography Workshop with John Reed: 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Learn some basic skills and try them out in some wild locations. Class size is limited to 30. Preregistration is required. Fees for the one-and-a-half-day workshop are $45 if paid before Jan. 4, $50 before Jan. 12 and $55 at the door. To register, call 912-496-7836.

Discover how the longleaf pines survive fires and provide sanctuary for many animals. Meet in the Environmental Education Classroom.
