STOCKBRIDGE — Georgia wildlife officials plan to hold a deer hunt at Panola Mountain State Park to control deer population in and around the park.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources said the park will be closed during the quota hunt Nov. 13 and 14.
Biologists conducted surveys and estimated that the park had between 60 and 70 deer per square mile last year. Wildlife officials say the recommended population is closer to 15 to 20 deer per square mile. An organized hunt last year netted 31 deer, bringing the herd down to a healthier size.
Wildlife officials say two highways near the park consistently rank among the highest in collisions between deer and cars.
