The man killed in a vehicle accident in Savannah on Sunday has been identified as Spc. Christopher M. Lewis, 23, of San Antonio, Texas.

Lewis was an AH-64 Attack Helicopter repairer assigned to Hunter Army Airfield with the 3rd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division.

He entered active duty in January 2012. Upon completion of basic training and advanced individual training, he was assigned to 3-17 on Hunter Army Airfield and deployed to Afghanistan for nine months that December.

Lewis' awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal and Aviation Badge.

A press release from the post, says the thoughts and prayers of the 3rd ID and Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield are with the soldier’s families and friends. Installation support services, including counselors and chaplains, have been provided to Lewis' family and unit.

WTOC reports that the specialist was driving on I-516 Sunday night. Investigators told the TV station that he apparently lost control of his vehicle, which rolled several times, jumped the median and ended up in the eastbound lanes. He was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital.
